Pacquiao vs Ugás: everything you need to know
Pacquiao vs Ugás: everything you need to know
After anticipating a fight of the year performance from Spence and Pacquiao, we are left disappointed after learning that Spence backed out. He was found with a torn retina during a medical exam and needed to take a medical leave. Let’s all wish him a speedy recovery. Boxing is a potentially lethal sport. But after the fighters have spilled their blood and guts over the ring, we all want them back in fighting form to take and dish more punishment all over again. Not many people know about cases like the Pacquiao inflicted damage on Antonio Margarito’s eye. It permanently stopped his boxing career.
Anyway, the show must go on! The venue has been paid for, sponsors have given the money, and rescheduling the bout is close to impossible. Boxing is not new to this, and for sure, the organizers have prepared for this situation.
It was announced that Pacquiao will now be fighting WBA Welterweight champion Yordenis Ugás. Like Pacquiao, Ugas is in excellent shape since he’s also scheduled to fight on the same night in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Spence bout. All the fighters need to do is make subtle changes in their training to adapt to the new opponent.
Like Spence, who has a height of 5’1/2″, Ugas (5’9″) towers over Pacquiao (5’6″). That’s a three-inch height advantage, and visually, it’s very noticeable. The rest of the stats, however, seem to show a different story.
Analysis: Pacquiao vs Ugás
This can be a very exciting fight. The underdog can pull a surprise and disappoint Pacquiao. On the other hand, Pacquiao can turn this into a one-sided beating the way defeated Antonio Margarito.
Tale of the tape:
Compared to Spence, Ugas has shorter arms. Spence has a reach of 72″, but Ugas only has 6’9″. That’s still a two-inch reach advantage over Pacquiao, but it’s probably not a determining factor in the coming fight. Pacquiao has been training to fight against opponents who are taller and have longer reach. Pacquiao’s trainers would have been negligent if they did not do that.
MANNY PACQUIAO | YORDENIS UGAS | ERROL SPENCE JR. | |

Ugas is younger than Pacquiao, and he is not as battle-scarred. That may be his advantage- a fresher body! However, that may also be his downfall. Ugas may not be hardened enough because he hasn’t fought many opponents. Unlike Pacquiao, Ugas hasn’t been exposed to different fighting styles. Ugas may have a fresher and lesser damaged body, but he may also be carrying a less tempered frame. Pacquiao fought fierce battles against legends who were in their prime. Ugas hasn’t.
Strategies:
To beat Pacquiao, Ugas has to be fast and agile with a devastating punch. He should also be ready to play a fast game until the end of the last round. Some observed that in his last fights, Pacquiao began losing steam after six rounds. Ugas should capitalize on that and increase his pressure against Pacquiao. He can do this by circling Pacquiao and destroying him with jabs and the occasional power punches.
To defeat Ugas, Pacquiao should imagine a quicker Margarito and do a repeat performance. He should also increase his stamina to overcome his perceived tiredness that comes after six rounds.
Odds:
The odds now are Pacquiao (-310) and Ugas (+245). It means that a bet of $100 for Ugas will earn get the bettor $245 if Ugas wins. On the other hand, if Pacquiao wins, those who bet $310 for him will earn $100.
Will Ugas be able to tire and knock Pacquiao cold? Will Pacquiao beat Ugas to pulp the way he retired Margarito?
